FG to enrol newspaper vendors into N-Power programme – Chris Ngige

The minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngige, says plans by the federal government to enroll newspaper vendors in the N-Power programme is to enable them acquire some skills

Ngige commends the vendors for being good citizens by choosing to earn a decent living through newspaper vending, instead of engaging in criminal activities.

The minister says enrolling the newspaper vendors in the programme is part of the government’s desire to encourage them in their work

The federal government has promised to enroll members of the newspaper vendors association of Nigeria into the N-Power programme, to enable them acquire some skills.

Labour and employment minister Chris Ngige made the promise on Friday, August 23, in Abuja when members of the federal secretariat branch of the association, led by its chairman, Desmond Obiagwu, paid him a courtesy visit, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Ngige commended the vendors for being good citizens by choosing to earn a decent living through newspaper vending, instead of engaging in criminal activities.

He expressed government’s desire to encourage them in their efforts, stating that government would enroll some of their members into the N-Power programme, a platform where Nigerians could access skills acquisition for development.

According to him, the vendors are also helping government through their work.

“Your association has helped the labour ministry because newspaper marketing is part of information dissemination.

“Through your activity, we get information on brewing labour unrest, and try to nip them in the bud through conciliatory meetings.”

Speaking earlier, Desmond Obiagwu, chairman, Federal Secretariat branch of the association, had congratulated Ngige on his re-appointment, and wished him success in navigating the “tough” terrain of the labour ministry.

Obiagwu said that Ngige’s numerous achievements during his first tenure, including the approval of a new national minimum wage for workers, informed his re-appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Meanwhile, Chris Ngige has assured workers that the issues surrounding new minimum wage implementation will soon be resolved.

He also said that he refused the registration of the United Labour Congress during his first term at the ministry because the prospective union did not meet the legal requirement of having 12 new labour unions, The Nation reports.

Ngige made this known to journalists shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari swore him in and assigned him a second time into the ministry during the inauguration of new ministers.

No exit date announced for Npower Batch A beneficiaries

The federal government clarified that no exit date has been announced yet for Batch A beneficiaries of the N-Power scheme

The government however said plans were underway to liaise with private sector for permanent employment. Members of the scheme receive N30,000 monthly salary.

The federal government says no date has been announced for the exit of the first batch of volunteers enrolled under the N-Power scheme.

Justice Bibiye who is the communications manager, National Social Investment Office (NSIO), in a statement on Friday, August 9 in Abuja, urged the public to disregard social media reports about current status of the programme.

He said that the federal government was liaising with state governments and the private sector to provide permanent engagement for the N-Power beneficiaries.

Introduced in 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari, the N-power Programme, is a graduate and non-graduate job enhancement scheme.

The objective is to enable them acquire the requisite skills, knowledge and experience for entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency at the culmination of their tenure on the programme.

The N-Power beneficiaries are then provided with N30, 000 monthly stipend and devices to aid their learning and skills development.

Bibiye said that progress was already being recorded in the programme as many beneficiaries had already started taking ownership of their lives by setting up small businesses with earnings from the N-power programme.

“Consequently, the federal government is already in talks with state governments and the private sector to solicit support for permanent engagement of the N-Power beneficiaries, who by virtue of their exposure to the work environment in the last two years have now garnered the needed experience to effectively operate in the industry.’’

The communications manager said that the former special adviser to the president on social investment, Maryam Uwais, was recently in Yenegoa, Bayelsa state, to inaugurate the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme.

He said the Uwais also intimated N-power beneficiaries of plans by government to assist them get a sustainable means of income as they prepared to exit the programme.

Bibiye said that Uwais also used the opportunity to encourage state governments to retain volunteers who provided services in schools and other public and private institutions in their states.

“Uwais was joined by Bayelsa government officials to ramp up on some ongoing social intervention programmes, including Marketnoni, Tradermoni.

“She also met with the Conditional Cash Transfer officials and beneficiaries in the state saying that the Federal Government through partnerships with some key private sector players is looking out for employment opportunities in the areas of Education, ICT, Agriculture, Security among others for the graduating N-power volunteers,’’ Bibiye said.

Meanwhile, some volunteers of N-Power in Osun state on Thursday, August 1, staged a peaceful protest across the state for being unfairly disengaged from the scheme by the agents of the federal government.

Legit.ng’s regional reporter in Osun state, Ibrahim Akinola, reports that some of the affected volunteers said they were unjustly disengaged despite being punctual at their various Places of Primary Assignment (PPA).
